Reluctant Hero
|
On June 21st, Miramax Home Entertainment will release Hostage, the Bruce Willis vehicle that drew reasonable theatrical reviews but didn't find its audience. Willis plays Jeff Talley, a failed Los Angeles hostage negotiator. Devastated by a disastrous experience, he moves to rural Bristo Camino, becomes the chief of police, and hopes that he can lead a quiet life. Circumstances have a harsher fate in mind when three teenagers take a family hostage in their home after a failed attempt to steal their car. The film is based on the Robert Crais best-selling novel. The DVD will include a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted and extended scenes, and a commentary by director Florent Siri. Presented in anamorphic video and Dolby Digital 5.1, expect an SRP of $29.99.

Incredulous Shrink

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will release the Robert De Niro and Dakota Fanning suspense fest, Hide and Seek, on July 5th. Robert De Niro plays a psychiatrist, trying to raise (and heal) his nine-year-old daughter, played by Dakota Fanning, after her mother's (Amy Irving) suicide. They leave New York for a quite and remote resort area, even though it's the dead of winter. Isolated in a bleak setting, the daughter makes a new invisible friend, Charlie. Disturbing and creepy, director John Polson worked hard to raise the hairs on the back of your neck. Be careful, in addition to the anamorphic video release, there will be a separate full screen disc. Based on previous Fox releases, I'd expect an SRP of $29.99. No further details are available yet.

Wacky Writer
|
Perhaps I'm just a cynic, but I suspect that Ardustry Home Entertainment is leveraging Teri Hatcher's career resurrection with the timing of its release of The Cool Surface. She co-stars with Robert Patrick, who plays a marginally stable and frustrated writer. She is Dani Payson, his neighbor. When she learns that he's a writer, she opens up, revealing herself and essentially becoming his inspiration. The relationship becomes a good deal more intimate, and if I recall correctly, the only appeal this film may have is Hatcher revealing her physical assets. The bare bones disc will be released on July 5th for a low SRP of $14.95.
