'Stepford Wives'; four from Criterion; Columbia October catalog
Suburban Bliss - 10:16am

Not really a hit but not the disaster many predicted, the big budget remake of the 70's horror classic The Stepford Wives grossed a respectable $60-odd million this past summer, and will hit DVD on October 26th. Paramount Home Entertainment will give this Nicole Kidman-starrer separate anamorphic widescreen and full screen versions, each with audio commentary with director Frank Oz, thirteen deleted scenes, the "Stepford: A Definition," "Stepford: The Architects," "Stepford: The Builders," "The Stepford Wives" and "The Stepford Husbands" featurettes, a gag reel and theatrical trailers. Retail will list for $29.95.

Psycho Ward - 10:16am

Due to hit stores on October 12th is Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment latest slate of catalog and TV on DVD releases.

From the vaults comes the Richard Donner nostalgia-fest Radio Flyer (which boasts unbilled narrator Tom Hanks), the classic comedy The Wackiest Ship in the Army, and a new unrated Betty Blue: Director's Cut. All are remastered in anamorphic widescreen, and include only trailers as extras. Retail will be $24.95 a pop, except Radio Flyer, which will go for a lower $19.95 list.

And Stephen King fans can enjoy Stephen King Presents: Kingdom Hospital - The Complete Series, a four-disc set that compiles every episode of the short-lived chiller. Presented in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 5.1 surround, extras include audio commentary on select episodes, the "Inside the walls: The Making of Kingdom Hospital" documentary, and three additional featurettes. Retail will be $49.95.

Politicks - 10:16am

Just in from The Criterion Collection are four new announcements, a pair of French favorites and two politically-themed dramas.

Due on October 5th are Robert Altman's Secret Honor and the complete eleven-episode run of the satirical Tanner '88. All are presented in 1.33:1 full screen, with the former in Dolby 1.0 mono and the later with 2.0 stereo mixes. Secret Honor will also include two audio audio commentaries by Altman and co-writer Donald Freed, a new interview with actor Philip Baker Hall, excerpts from archival films documenting key events in President Richard Nixon's political career, and an essay by critic Michael Wilmington. Altman and series creator Garry Trudeau have also contributed a new interview to Tanner '88 set, which also includes essays by Michael Wilmington, Michael Nash, and culture critic Garry Kornblau. Retail will be $39.95 and $29.95, respectively.

Next up on October 19th are the French faves Eyes Without a Face and Fat Girl, each in anamorphic widescreen, and the former in Dolby 1.0 mono, and the latter with both Dolby Digital and (rare for a Criterion release) DTS soundtracks. Supplements on Eyes Without a Face include the "Blood of the Beasts" documentary about Paris slaughterhouses, a still gallery, essays and trailers, while Fat Girl comes with behind-the-scenes footage, trailers and essays. List will go for $29.95 a pop.
