'L Word'; 'Gothika,' 'Seven Brides' SEs; new Paramount catalog faves

Lipstick Lesbians - 4:15pm

Hot on the heels of Showtime's popular Queer as Folk, the cable network unleashed the controversial drama The L Word this past January, and the reviews and ratings were even better. And now, on November 9th, you can find out what all the controversy is about when Showtime releases the show's complete first season on DVD.

The five-disc set will include all fourteen episodes presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1, plus audio commentaries on select episodes, never-before-seen footage, a blooper reel, and an original puppet show performed by the cast(!). Retail will be $69.95.

Berry Times Two - 4:15pm

Can't get enough of Halle Berry? Already preordered your Catwoman tickets online? Then mark October 12th on your calendar, for that is when Warner Home Video will join the double-dipping sweepstakes with a new two-disc special edition reissue of last year's Berry thriller Gothika. While I doubt too many fans have been beating down Warner's door for a new version of this one, they will deliver a feature-loaded set: anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track, audio commentary with director , the "On the Set" and "Visual Effects" featurette, new backstory segments created exclusively for the DVD and narrated by actor bernard Hill, the Limp Bizkit "Behind Blue Eyes" music video and accompanying "Making the Video" special, Halle Berry's Punk'd appearance, and theatrical trailers. Retail will be $26.95.

Also due on October 12th is a new two-disc special edition of the musical classic Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Newly remastered, Warner has not yet announced the full specs for the set, but retail will be $26.95. Stay tuned for further details.

Behind Blue Eyes - 4:15pm

Just in from Paramount Home Entertainment are the full specs for three of their eagerly-awaited new special edition reissues due this fall.

Streeting on September 28th is the Footloose: Special Collector's Edition, which comes with a 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track, two audio commentaries with producer Craig Zadan and writer Dean Pitchford and Kevin Bacon, the two-part "Footloose: A Modern Musical" documentary, "Footloose: Songs That Tell A Story" featurette and the theatrical trailer. Retail will list for $19.95.

Next up on October 5th is The Untouchables: Special Collector's Edition. Sporting a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track, the theatrical trailer, and five new featurettes: "The Script," "The Cast," "Production Stories," "Reinventing the Genre" and "The Classic," plus the vintage featurette "The Men." Retail will also list for $19.95.

And streeting on September 7th is the classic Murder on the Orient Express, which has been newly remastered in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1, and includes the new "Making Murder On The Orient Express" four-part documentary, the "Agatha Christie: A Portrait" featurette and the theatrical trailer. Retail will cost you a mere $14.95.

And for your Jason fans, the monosyllabic horror icon will be getting a facelift on Paramount's upcoming Friday the 13th: From Crystal Lake to Manhattan - The Ultimate Collection DVD Edition box set, which is due on October 5th. Responding to fan complaints of Jason's hockey-masked mug on the cover and inside packaging (Which Jason goes with which movie? Why does the cover shot not look quite right?), Paramount has released rejiggered and final artwork for the set, which you can check out in our multimedia gallery (http://www.dvdfile.com/interactive/drive_in/index.html).

And to kickoff the set in high style, Paramount Home Entertainment will also be hosting a special panel discussion, Jasons Unmasked, at this year's mammoth 2004 ComiCon convention in San Diego, California. Appearing on the panel will be five of the actors who have played Jason, plus directors Tom McLoughlin (Jason Lives) and John Carl Buechler (The New Blood). All will be on hand to talk about the films and the upcoming DVD release, including answering questions about the much-discussed deleted footage. There will also be a few surprises on hand for attendees, and moderating the panel will be yours truly, so I hope to see you there. For convention information, check out the ComiCon website (http://www.comic-con.org) for details.
