Columbia catalog; 'Salem's Lot'; Anchor Bay horrors

Demolition Derby - 10:54pm

You know its love when she repairs her own smashed-in bumper. Leading off Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment's September 28th lineup of new catalog releases, it's a new special edition of the mother of all cinematic car wrecks, John Carpenter's Christine. While not a huge box office hit on first release in 1983, the flick has developed a small cult following over the years, which will likely thrill to a host of new extras: audio commentary by Carpenter and star Keith Gordon, three new featurettes by documentarian Laurent Bouzereau, no less than 20 deleted scenes, filmographies and bonus trailers. Presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 2.0 surround, retail will list for $24.95.

Also due on the 28th are a host of new reissues of previous Columbia special editions, all which boast the same extras as before, only with new limited edition packaging that also includes a bonus book. The four titles include: Sense & Sensibility, Persuasion, the 1996 remake of Little Women, and the only one of the four new to DVD, Roman Polanski's controversial Tess, which introduced Nastassia Kinski to the world. Retail will list for $24.95 apiece. Note that Tess will also be available in a non-book special edition version that also (oddly) retails for $24.95, and the extras for either have yet to be announced. Stay tuned.

Also due on the 28th are five catalog favorites making their DVD debuts: Best of the Best, My New Gun, The Big Town and Sherlock: Undercover Dog. All but Sherlock will be presented in anamorphic widescreen (the Undercover Dog gets the full screen treatment only) and include bonus trailers. Retail will cost you $24.95 a pop.

TV on DVD fans can also look forward to the DVD debut of 227: The Complete First Season. Starring Marla Gibbs and the incomparable Jackee, this three-disc masterpiece comes complete with 4:3 full screen transfers and Dolby mono tracks. The only extras are episode synopses, and list price will go for $29.95.

And last but not least, Columbia TriStar will also unveil a new 35th Anniversary Edition of the classic Easy Rider on the 28th. Full details have yet to be announced, but watch this space...

Bloodsuckers - 10:54pm

Only a mere couple of weeks after its successful cable run on TNT, Warner Home Video has announced an October 12th street date for the original miniseries Salem's Lot. Based on the Stephen King novel and already filmed once before by Tobe Hooper in 1979, this single-disc set will include the complete miniseries presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 5.1 surround. Alas, there are no extras, and list price will be $19.95.

Thanks for the Ride, Lady! - 10:54pm

Just in from Anchor Bay Entertainment are reissues for two 80's horror cult favorites, both of which will get the Divimax treatment. Due on September 28th, both Creepshow 2 and Children of the Corn will each be remastered in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1, and include new audio commentaries (with directors Michael Gornick and Fritz Kiersch, respectively), trailers and, on Creepshow 2, a still gallery. Retail will be $19.95 a pop.

Also due for release on the 28th is a single-disc edition of Anchor Bay's recent Day of the Dead two-disc special edition. The single-disc version simply drops the extra disc, and will retail for $19.95.
