'Good Bye Lenin!'; 'Videodrome,' more Criterion; MGM September catalog

Just in from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment is their July 27th lineup of new release, catalog and TV on DVD announcements.

Called "Charming, offbeat, hilarious and brilliant," the foreign favorite Good Bye, Lenin! will hit DVD in a new special edition complete with anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track, an audio commentary with director Wolfgang Becker, three featurettes, ten deleted scenes, and the theatrical trailer. Retail will be $27.95.

Up next are two catalog titles making their DVD debuts: the Walter Hill blues curio Crossroads, starring Ralph Macchio, and the basketball drama Heaven is a Playground. Both feature remastered anamorphic widescreen transfers, Dolby 2.0 surround tracks and bonus trailers. There are no other extras, and retail will list for $24.95 a pop.

Rounding out Columbia's July 27th lineup is Good Times: The Complete Third Season. Once again featuring 4:3 full screen transfers and Dolby mono tracks, there are no extras aside from episode synopses. Retail will be $39.95.

Boob Tube - 12:54pm

You'll never look at TV the same way again. Coming on August 24th is David Cronenberg's uber-icky cult classic Videodrome, which will be presented for the first time ever in a new director-approved, uncut and unrated version. Boasting a new 1.85 anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital mono track, extras include audio commentaries with director David Cronenberg, director of photography Mark Irwin, actors James Woods and Deborah Harry, "Forging the New Flesh" 30-minute featurette on the makeup effects, "Fear on Film" 26-minute roundtable discussion from 1982 (with filmmakers David Cronenberg, John Carpenter, John Landis, and Mick Garris), "Samurai Dreams" complete and unedited faux Japanese AV feature seen in the film, the "Camera" short film by Cronenberg from the Toronto Film Festival,a promotional featurette, a still gallery, theatrical trailers, and essays by film critic Carrie Rickey and Videodrome expert Tim Lucas. Retail will be $39.95.
 
Next up is Federico Fellini's I Vitelloni, which features a remastered 1.33:1 transfer, Italian Dolby mono track, new "The Making of I Vitelloni" documentary, three still galleries, newsreels, an essay by writer Tom Piazza and the theatrical trailer. Retail is $29.95.
 
Last but not least comes the long-awaited debut of Richard Linklater's cult classic Slacker. Also remastered in 1.33:1 and Dolby 2.0 stereo, extras include audio commentaries by Linklater and cast and crew, deleted scenes, rare casting tapes, Linklater's complete, first full-length feature It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books (with commentary), 10th Anniversary Reunion footage, a still gallery, script drafts, a booklet with reviews, essays, production notes, and an introduction, and the theatrical trailer. Retail is $39.95.

Twelve Angry Men - 12:54pm

Rounding out today's news is MGM Home Entertainment's September slate of catalog announcements, which will focus on some of Hollywood's most acclaimed classics. Streeting on September 7th are: Judgment at Nuremberg, Blithe Spirit, Brief Encounter, the 1946 version of Great Expectations, In Which We Serve, Madeleine, 1948's Oliver Twist, The Passionate Friends and This Happy Breed. All are presented in their original 1.33:1 full screen aspect ratios and Dolby Digital mono (except Judgment at Nuremberg, which features a 1.66:1 non-anamorphic widescreen transfer) and include theatrical trailers. Judgment at Nuremberg also includes three featurettes "In Conversation: Abby Mann and Maximilian Schell," "A Tribute to Stanley Kramer" and "The Value of a Single Human Being" and a still gallery. Retail will list for $14.95 a pop.

Also due on September 7th are four more populist flicks: Farrah Fawcett in the acclaimed telefilm The Burning Bed, Gotham, Moving Target, and Ray Bradbury's The Martian Chronicles, starring Rock Hudson. All are presented in 4:3 full screen only, and feature no extras aside from trailers (except The Burning Bed, which has no extras). Retail will also list for $14.95 apiece.
