'Dallas' box; Columbia July titles; more Universal special editions

Grab your 10-gallon hat and head for southfork, where power, wealth, sex and J.R. Ewing await you in Dallas: The Complete First & Second Seasons. At last making its DVD debut on August 24th from Warner Home Video, this five-disc set will included remastered 4:3 full screen transfers and Dolby 2.0 tracks, audio commentary on the series pilot and other select episodes by Larry Hagman, Charlene Tilton, and creator David Jacobs, and a new retrospective featurette "Soaptalk Dallas Reunion" featuring Hagman, Tilton, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray. All this can be yours for only $49.95.

Just in from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment is their July 20th lineup of new releases and more TV on DVD.

Making their DVD debut are two recent theatrical releases, the foreign import Broken Wings and the Steven Seagal thriller Out of Reach. Each gets the anamorphic widescreen treatment (Out of Reach also includes a full frame option), plus Dolby 2.0 surround tracks and bonus trailers. List price will be $29.95 and $24.95, respectively.

From the vast Columbia catalog comes war drama Castle Keep, starring Burt Lancaster, Peter Falk and Bruce Dern, and directed by Sydney Pollack. Remastered in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 2.0 surround, the only extras are filmographies and bonus trailers, and retail will go for $19.95.

Finally, Columbia will also release three new TV on DVD follow-ups on the 20th: Soap: The Complete Second Season, Starsky & Hutch: The Complete Second Season and All in the Family: The Complete Third Season. Each is presented in 4:3 full screen and Dolby mono, and include no extras aside from airdate info and episode synopses. Retail will be $49.95 for Starsky & Hutch, and $29.95 a pop for the others.

Rounding out today's news is next more next catalog announcements from Universal Studios Home Video, who will be pulling three musical favorites from their catalog this summer.

Debuting on September 28th is a new special editions of Robert Zemeckis' cult classic I Wanna Hold Your Hand. Remastered in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby 5.1, extras include a new audio commentary by Zemeckis and co-writer Bob Gale, filmographies, production notes and the theatrical trailer. Also due on the 28th is the Beatles pseudo-bio-pic Backbeat, which includes a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby 5.1 surround track, audio commentary with director Iain Stanley, additional interviews with Stanley and actor Ian Hart, deleted scenes, a still gallery, casting footage, a director essay, and theatrical trailers. Retail is $19.95 a pop.

Finally, Universal has also released the full specs for the just-announced Jesus Christ Superstar special edition, which will be reissued on August 31st with a new 2.35;1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track, audio commentary with director Norman Jewison and actor Ted Neeley, production notes, filmographies and the theatrical trailer. Retail will be a mere $14.95.
