'Fighting Temptations'; 'Shield,' more Fox; controversial 'Buffalo Soldiers' gets release

Kicking off this week's news is the latest Cuba Gooding sorta-hit, the musical comedy-drama The Fighting Temptations, which earned nearly $50 million at the box office this past fall. Paramount Home Entertainment will release the gospel-fueled hit on February 3rd in separate anamorphic widescreen and full screen versions. Each includes a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track, 8 extended musical numbers, another 7 extended scenes and the theatrical trailer. Retail is $29.95.

Paramount will also release the made-for-MTV musical update of Wuthering Heights, featuring the songs of frequent Meat Loaf collaborator Jim Steinman, on January 27th. Yes, be afraid.) The disc is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1, and there are no extras. Retail is $24.95.

Combat Rock - 2:34pm

Just in from Buena Vista Home Entertainment is the announcement of the under-rug-swept political comedy Buffalo Soldiers, which sat on the shelf for over a year and was then quietly released in only a few theaters this past fall. This incendiary hot potato stars Joaquin Phoenix, Ed Harris and Anna Paquin, and will at last get a DVD release on January 13th. The set includes a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track, plus an audio commentary by director Gregory Jordan, the "Beyond the Iron Curtain" featurette, an "Anatomy of a Scene" TV special and theatrical trailers. Retail is $29.95.

Rounding out today's news is a batch of new January announcements from Fox Home Entertainment. Making its debut on January 6th is The Shield: The Complete Second Season. This four-disc set includes 4:3 full screen transfers and Dolby 2.0 surround tracks, audio commentaries on four episodes by creator Shawn Ryan, star Michael Chiklis and other cast and crew, no less than 38 deleted scenes, a scene evolution for "Connie Gets Shot," the featurettes "Wrap Day," "Director's Roundtable" and "Raising the Barn," a teaser spot and ROM extras including complete teleplays. Retail is $59.95.

On January 13th, Fox will also release two recent theatrical romantic comedies, Le Divorce, staring The Ring's Naomi Watts and Kate Hudson, and the import Lucia Lucia. Each features anamorphic widescreen and full screen transfers, a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track and trailers, while Lucia Lucia also includes audio commentary by director Antonio Serrano and two featurettes, while Le Divorce also includes a featurette. Retail is $27.95 a pop.
