'Eight Crazy Nights'; 'Tomb Raider 2,' more Paramount holiday titles

A Knight's Tale - 2:47pm

What if Adam Sandler starred in an animated film and nobody came? Find out on November 4th when Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment releases Eight Crazy Nights, a box office disappointment that failed to spread much holiday cheer when it was released late last year. Despite its poor performance Columbia will stuff this two-disc set with a wealth of extras: anamorphic widescreen and full screen transfers, two cast and technical audio commentaries, "A Day with the Meatball" and 4 additional featurettes, deleted scenes with optional commentary, a multi-angle animation progression, the HBO First Look special, a music video, trailers and a TV spot. Retail is $27.95.

Also debuting on the 4th is the drama Pact of Silence, starring Gerard Depardieu. Presented in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1, extras include trailers and filmographies. Retail is $29.95.

From the Columbia vaults come a quintet of releases new-to-DVD: Micki & Maude, Platinum Blonde and the animated The Real Schemeil. Presented in full screen (except Micki & Maude, which gets a new 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer), extras are minimal with only bonus trailers included. Retail is $24.95 a pop, except The Real Schemeil which will set you back $19.95.

"Elementary, My Dear Watson" - 2:47pm

Just in from Paramount Home Entertainment is their lineup of December catalog releases. At last dusted off from the studio's vast library are Young Sherlock Holmes, the 1974 update of The Great Gatsby, Paul Newman in Hud, 1992's Wuthering Heights, The Last of the Red Hot Lovers, the 1970 comedy classic The Out-of-Towners, Plaza Suite, Star-Spangled Girl and This Property is Condemned. All feature new anamorphic widescreen transfers and Dolby Digital 5.1 remixes (except Star-Spangled Girl, Plaza Suite and The Last of the Red Hot Lovers) and no extras. Retail is $19.95.

TV fans can look forward to a wide assortment of best-ofs and box sets this holiday season. From the minds at MTV come the compilations The Real World: Hook-Ups and The Real World You Never Saw: Paris. Each is presented in full screen and retail for $14.95 a pop. Street date is November 11th, while December 2nd will see the release of The Jamie Kennedy eXperiment: The Complete First Season. This four-disc set retails for $39.95 and watch this space for further details. And making the jump from Warner Home Video to Paramount on December 16th is South Park: The Complete Third Season. Retail is $49.95, and full specs will be announced soon...

Also just announced from Paramount are street dates for two of their big summer sequels, Tomb Raider 2: The Cradle of Life and Rugrats Go Wild. Neither was the expected big hit at the box office but both will get the special edition in separate anamorphic widescreen and full screen transfers, with street dates of November 18th and December 16th, respectively. Stay tuned for the full specs.

Finally, The Star Trek Motion Pictures Collection is due on November 25th and features the two-disc Collector's Edition of Trek I-V, plus the existing single-disc editions of Trek VI through Nemesis. Oddly, the upcoming two-disc reissue of VI: The Undiscovered Country will not be included in this box set. Go figure. Retail is $179.95.
