'Boat Trip'; 'Kids are Alright'; new SNL best-ofs

From winning an Oscar to... Boat Trip. Watch another piece of the wreckage that is Cuba Gooding's career wash up onto the shore this September 30th, when Artisan Entertainment gives this one the special edition treatment. Set to be released in separate R-Rated and Unrated versions, each features anamorphic widescreen and full screen transfers and a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track, plus extras including an audio commentary with director Mort Nathan and Gooding, a subtitle trivia track, deleted scenes and the trailer. Retail is $24.95.

Rock opera - 11:03pm

Another great announcement for rock fans comes today from Pioneer Entertainment, who will release The Who's classic The Kids Are Alright on September 30th. Packed with concert footage and interviews, this seminal concert film features one of the last performances by the band's late drummer Keith Moon. Newly remastered, this new version restores 8 minutes of previously unseen footage and is presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen with DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 surround tracks. Pioneer will release two versions: a single-disc Deluxe Edition that features an interactive interview and commentary with director Jeff Stein plus subtitle track liner notes, and a two-disc Special Edition with the same extras plus over 100 minutes of alternate camera angles that isolate each band member, a new interview intro with Roger Daltrey, a 40-minute documentary on the film's restoration, before-and-after audio and video comparisons, an isolated John Entwistle bass track, "The Who's London" interactive video tour a "Who Are You?" light and slide show trivia game. There may even be a rare Ringo Starr recording as an easter egg if you look hard enough. Retail is $24.95 for the single-disc edition and $29.95 for the two-disc set.

Rounding out today's news is the latest on Lions Gate Home Entertainment's new batch of classic Saturday Night Live releases. First up on August 5th is Saturday Night Live: 25 Years of Music, a five-disc set featuring the best live musical performances and musical comedy sketches from the entire history of the show. 60 classic performances are included and each disc is hosted by a special guest star, including Chevy Chase, Martin Short and Jay Mohr. Performances include such top acts as Madonna, Billy Joel, Tom Petty, Tina Turner, The Go-Go's, Duran Duran, Nirvana, Metallica, Jewel and Sinead O'Connor's infamous performance of "War" with a special intro by Lorne Michaels. All are presented in their original 4:3 aspect ratios and remixed in both Dolby 5.1 surround and 2.0 stereo. Retail is $49.95.Ê

Then, due to hit shelves on August 12th are a trio of new compilation discs: SNL: The Best of Will Ferrell, SNL: The Best of Molly Shannon and SNL: The Best of Adam Sandler. Each features 75 minutes of classic sketches plus extras including audition and dress rehearsal footage, a still gallery, favorite outtakes and other character TV appearances. Retail is $19.95 a pop.
