Street date alert; 'Spock' specs; New Criterion titles; more D-VHS from Fox

Bad news for Ed Wood fans...Buena Vista has just announced that the upcoming special edition of Tim Burton's Academy Award-winning comedy has been postponed until further notice. Originally scheduled for release on 8/13, no new date has been announced, but stay tuned...

In other spec change news, Columbia has issued a follow-up press release for the Michael Apted thriller Enigma, due to hit DVD on 9/24. The disc will now no longer contain any of the announced extra features, including the audio commentary and deleted scenes, only the film's theatrical trailer and filmographies. Retail remains $27.95. Last but not least, the upcoming 8/6 DVD release of the killer bee thriller The Swarm will not include the audio commentary by star Michael Caine as originally announced. Additional extras such as the making-of featurette and the retail price of $19.95 remain the same.

Spock specs - 1:46am

Alright, Trekkies, here's another one to add to your "Must Buy" list this Christmas. Paramount has just announced the full specs for the new 2-disc special edition of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, debuting on 10/22. Featuring a 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer of the theatrical cut plus a new Dolby Digital Surround EX mix, extras include an audio commentary by director Leonard Nimoy, writer and producer Harve Bennett, director of photography Charles Correll and actor Robin Curtis, a text commentary by the authors of the "Star Trek Encyclopedia," "Captain's Log" interviews with the cast, the "Space Docks And Birds Of Prey," "Speaking Klingon," "Klingon And Vulcan Costumes" and "Terraforming And Prime Directive" featurettes, a two still galleries with storyboards and production photos, and the trailer. Retail is $29.95.

New from Criterion - 1:46am

Just in from Criterion are their latest October releases, led by a new 2-disc special edition of acclaimed indie director Jim Jarmusch's Down by Law. Featuring a new anamorphic widescreen transfer, extras include interviews, press conference footage, 2 music videos, 3 still galleries, trailers, and more. Also arriving on 10/22 is director Michael Powell's The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, presented in its original 1.37:1 aspect ratio and English mono, along with an audio commentary with Powell and Martin Scorsese, a making-of featurette, still galleries, and the trailer. Retail is $39.95 each. Finally, also hitting shelves on 10/8 is a new Akira Kurosawa 4-pack, featuring the classics Seven Samurai, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo and Sanjuro. This collection includes the same discs currently available, with a retail price of $99.95.

Big Momma's D-VHS - 1:46am

Rounding out today's news, a few more D-VHS titles are trickling out of Fox, who have announced four new releases due on 9/3: Independence Day, the Michael Douglas thriller Don't Say A Word, Entrapment, and a movie just crying out for the hi-def treatment, Big Momma's House. Each tape features Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 surround tracks, and no extras. Retail is $34.95 each.
