More 'A.I.' - 12:34am

A bit more news on the upcoming 3/5 A.I. Artificial Intelligence DVD release. DreamWorks has announced that they will be releasing a pan & scan version of the title concurrent with the widescreen edition, with the exact same extra features. Arriving on 2/26 will be another batch of new Criterion and Home Vision releases. Let's start with In the Mood For Love, which is one big mega-set, complete with 1.66:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, the "The Music of In The Mood For Love" interactive essay, an alternate ending and deleted scenes with optional commentary, a Wong Kar-Wai biography, interview and Q&A, a press conference with stars Maggie Cheung Man-Yuk and Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, an essay by historian Gina Marchetti, the original EPK, still gallery with promotional art and concepts, trailers, and TV spots. Retail is $39.95. Next up are two Milos Forman early classics. Both Loves Of A Blonde and The Fireman's Ball include full frame transfers and Czech 2.0 stereo tracks, interviews with Milos Forman, and trailers, while the latter sports a behind-the-scenes look at the transfer process. Retail is $29.95 each.

Finally, on 2/19 Home Vision will release the documentaries The Confessions Of Robert Crumb and Jackson Pollock: Love And Death On Long Island. Both are full frame and 2.0 stereo only, with a retail price of $19.95.

Just announced from Columbia TriStar is a new special edition reissue of The Replacement Killers, arriving on 3/5. Fox has also just announced a cancellation for Ferngully 2: The Last Rainforest. The first Ferngully, h however, remains scheduled for 2/14. Watch for full specs soon...

Buena Vista April showcase - 12:31am

Arriving on 4/24 is a wave of new catalog titles from Buena Vista. Some comedy favorites and 80's classics include Three Men & A Baby, Three Men & A Little Lady, Ruthless People, Turner & Hooch, Three Fugitives, and a movie-only version of Dick Tracy. Artificial Spielberg - 12:02pm

His love is real...but he is not! Just in time for the Oscars, DreamWorks has just announced the arrival of Steven Spielberg's A.I. Artificial Intelligence. The two-disc DVD set hits shelves on 3/5, and includes a wealth of bonus features (and though not specified on the release, the set does contain both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround tracks. Bombs away - 12:11am

Full specs have just come in from Buena Vista for the long-awaited special edition of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame, scheduled to hit DVD on 3/19. Featuring a THX-certified, 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital and DTS tracks, additional extras include an audio commentary with directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale and producer Don Hahn, the 25-minute making of featurette from the previous laserdisc release, the "A Guy Like You" multi-language reel, a "Topsy Turvy" interactive game, a sing-along, and trailers. Meanwhile, the direct-to-video sequel The Hunchback Of Dame II is a more bare bones release, featuring a 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital and DTS tracks, and promo spots. Retail is $29.95 each.

Buena Vista has also announced specs for some of their upcoming 2002 titles, though strangely no street dates(?) The action flick Iron Monkey features a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, English 5.1 Dolby Digital surround track, new introduction by Quentin Tarantino, an interview with Danny Yuen, the "Score Piece" featurette, and trailers. The recent "N*Sync" movie On The Line gets the full special edition treatment, complete with audio commentary with directors Eric Bross and Emmanuelle Chriqui and stars Lance Bass and Joey Fatone, a behind-the-scenes featurette, storyboard comparison, outtakes, deleted scenes with commentary, the "On The Line" music video and making of the video featurette, home movies, N*Sync bios, and trailers. Retail is $29.95 each, and watch for street dates soon.

Last but not least, Buena Vista has announced yet another delay for the Vista Series edition of Pearl Harbor, which is being bumped again from its previous 5/14 street date. The title is now a 4-disc set(!) and scheduled for sometime in the second half of 2002. Yikes!

Points of view - 12:12am

Just announced by Criterion are a trio of classics, all arriving on DVD on 3/12. First up is Federico Fellini's Juliet Of The Spirits, featuring a new 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, new English subtitle translation, and the trailer. Retail is $29.95.

Next up is David Gordon Green's George Washington, complete with new 2.35;1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, English 2.0 stereo mix, and subtitles. Extras include an audio commentary with director David Gordon Green, cinematographer Tim Orr, and actor Paul Schneider, a deleted scene with commentary, David Gordon Green's short films, a Charlie Rose interview with David Gordon Green, exclusive new video interviews with the cast, Clu Gulager's 1969 short film "A Day with the Boys," and the original theatrical trailer. Retail is $39.95.

Finally, we have the Kurosawa classic Rashomon, fully loaded and restored. This set features a new 1.33:1 transfer from a high-definition master, original Japanese and alternate English dubbed mono tracks, audio commentary with Japanese film historian Donald Richie, video introduction by Robert Altman, excerpts from "The World of Kazuo Miyagawa," a documentary film on Rashomon's cinematographer, reprints of the Rashomon source stories, a reprinted excerpt from his book "Something Like an Autobiography, and the theatrical trailer. Retail is also $39.95.

Just in from Columbia is the Jet Li sci-fi action thriller The One arrives on 3/5. Disney has also announced a 5/14 street date for Corky Romano, and another Jet Li adventure The Legend 2, arriving on 2/12. Stay tuned for specs...

Universal winter lineup - 3:52pm

Just in from Universal is their next wave of winter announcements, including many new music titles ('bout time!) First up is the recent sorta-hit The Musketeer, coming to DVD on 2/29. The disc features a 2.35;1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, Dolby Digital and DTS tracks, casting tapes, and the trailer. Retail is $26.95.

Next up is a bonanza for Bob Hope fans on 3/5. Universal will release a total of 10 Hope movies across 8 releases, including Paleface, The Ghost Breakers, double features of My Favorite Blonde/ Star Spangled Rhythm and College Swing/ The Big Broadcast Of 1938, and The Bob Hope Roadshow Series Collection, featuring Road To Morocco, Road To Singapore, Road To Utopia, and Road to Zanzibar. All are available individual for $19.95 (the two double feature discs for $24.95), while The Roadshow Series Collection box set lists for $69.95. All are presented in full frame with English and French mono tracks, while the Roadshow Series titles also include still galleries, the original radio broadcast shows, and DVD-ROM extras.

On the music end Universal will finally be releasing some decent music titles, all arriving on 1/29. While features are lackluster - full frame transfers and standard 2.0 stereo mixes - at least we are getting more than another Shania Twain collection! Titles include Bernstein: The Making Of West Side Story, Def Leppard: Visualize and Def Leppard: Historia, and Barber Of Seville. Retail is $24.95.

Strawberry fields forever - 12:02am

Another classic just announced from Criterion, Ingmar Bergman's Wild Strawberries. Hitting shelves on 2/12, this two-disc set features an all-new full frame transfer, the original Swedish mono track with English subtitles, audio commentary with film scholar Peter Cowie, the 90-minute documentary "Ingmar Bergman On Life And Work," and a still gallery. Retail is $39.95.

Two from Warner - 12:02am

Two new ones just announced from Warner and New Line, both arriving on 1/29. First up is the thriller Blacktop, starring Meat Loaf(?), which features a full screen transfer, 2.0 surround and subtitle tracks in English, French and Spanish, and cast and crew filmographies. Retail is $19.95. Next up from New Line is the drama The Prime Gig, starring Ed Harris and Julia Ormond. The disc features 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen and full screen transfers, English 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS tracks, and the trailer. Retail is $24.95.

Street date alert - 12:02am

A spec update and cancellation notice from Fox...the upcoming Shirley Temple trifecta of Heidi, Dimples and Bright Eyes, all due on 1/29, will include both colorized and the original black and white versions on the same disc of all three films. Specs and the $19.95 list price each remains the same. Fox has also announced a cancellation of the Boondocks Saints DVD, originally scheduled for 12/18. No new date, if any, has been set.

In other quite interesting news, grab those copies of Fox's Jingle All The Way while you can. Due to a recent lawsuit, Fox has issued this notice to retailers:

"Because of an adverse court ruling against Fox in a copyright infringement case regarding "Jingle All The Way ", we are stopping deliveries of "Jingle" DVDs and videotapes until the pending matter can be resolved. Fox is prosecuting an appeal.. In the meantime, however, all DVDs and videotapes of the title that you have available for sale should immediately be removed from distribution. We will inform you when we resume taking orders and shipping the title, but we do not anticipate making further deliveries this year."

Well, looks like The Grinch has come early this year! Thankfully, the movie is so bad, will anyone notice?
