Buena Vista street date alert - 12:01am
Just announced from Buena Vista are a number of new winter catalog
titles. Adding a couple more titles to their Vista Series roster,
on 1/15 watch for a new special edition of the 90's western Tombstone,
along with a Vista reissue of The Sixth Sense. Also arriving
on 1/15 are three more Miramax Classics, including the Catherine
Deneuve import Belle Du Jour, a 40th Anniversary Edition
of the live-action version of The Hunchback Of Notre Dame
with Anthony Quinn, and the comedy Young Girls Of Rochefort.
Retail is $32.95 a pop. And last but not least, Disney will release
the animated historical adventure Disney's American Legends
on 2/12. Stay tuned for specs...
Bad moves we love - 12:01am
Just in time for the holidays, on 11/20 Rhino will finally release
two more volumes of Mystery Science Theater 3000, Manos:
Hands Of Fate and Mitchell. Each disc is low on extras,
featuring only a full screen transfer and English 2.0 tracks.
Retail is a low $19.95.

Two from Frankenheimer - 1:54pm
Just announced from Paramount are two John Frankenheimer classics,
both due on 1/8. (Well, okay, maybe only one of these is truly
a classic.) First up is a special edition of Seconds, a
sorely overlooked gem from the 60's starring a hollowed-out Rock
Hudson. The disc includes a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer
and English and French mono tracks, an audio commentary with Frankenheimer,
and the trailer. Also due is one of my favorite unintentionally
bad movies ever made, Prophecy. Features include a 1.85:1
anamorphic widescreen transfer, English and French 2.0 stereo
tracks, and the trailer. (What, no commentary!?) Retail is $29.95
a pop.
'Folk' specs - 1:54pm
Just announced from Showtime are the full specs for that Queer
As Folk 6-disc special edition, due on 1/15. Running over
900 minutes, all the first season episodes are included in anamorphic
widescreen and Dolby 2.0 surround, along with a host of extras
- special editions of episodes 1, 11 and 18 with actor and producer
commentary, gag reel, extended scenes with introduction by Hal
Sparks, "Meet The Folk" biographies and filmographies,
photo gallery, "At A Glance" indexes, show bumpers (i.e.,
TV spots), a sneak peek at season two, and DVD-ROM extras including
exclusive content and weblinks. Retail is $119.95 and click

Fox price drops - 7:09pm
Need that extra special - or cheap - gift for that special someone
on Valentine's Day? Then Fox has just the promotion for you. On
1/8, Fox will reprice the following titles to $19.95: Hope
Floats, Never Been Kissed, Ever After, One
Fine Day, Where The Heart Is, Drive Me Crazy,
Stealing Beauty, Love Potion #9, French Kiss,
the movie-only edition of Romeo + Juliet, and making its
DVD debut, Jennifer Aniston in The Object Of My Affection,
which features a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, English
5.1 and English and French 2.0 surround tracks, and trailers.
Gee, a Hope Floats/Glitter two-pack would make a great gift, wouldn't
it...?

Yet another big winner in the "movie bombs at box office,
gets announced two weeks later on video" sweepstakes, Mariah
Carey's torpedoed attempt at a silver screen acting career Glitter
hits DVD on 1/15. No specs yet, but can we hope for a Mariah commentary?

Me Claus, Roger And Hammerstein's Cinderella and The
Big Heat on 12/18, Brother and Greenfingers
on 1/2, Zebra Lounge on 1/9, and Tortilla Soup on

What if feels like to be Madonna - 7:09pm
Missed Madonna's big Drowned World Tour this past summer? Didn't
want to pay $275 bucks a ticket when you knew a DVD would be released?
Well, on 11/13, you're in luck. Warner will release Madonna
Drowned World Tour Live, featuring the same live broadcast
recently carried on HBO. The disc retails for $24.95, with full
specs to be announced soon. Ms. M will also release a new greatest
hits compilation on CD the same week, though no companion DVD
will be issued as all the videos are already out on the Madonna
93-99 DVD compilation and the 'Music' DVD singles...
'Starwoids' lands on DVD - 7:09pm
From the "Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction" department
comes the acclaimed documentary Starwoids, about those
Star Wars fans who waited in line for six weeks or more to be
the first to see Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Well-timed to
coincide with the DVD debut of The Phantom Menace itself, Starwoids
hits DVD on 10/16 and comes packed with extras. Presented in full
frame and 2.0 stereo, supplements include a Kevin Smith intro
and interview, audio commentary, deleted scenes and more. Retail
is $19.95.

Wrapped in plastic - 10:45pm
Just announced from Artisan are the final specs for the long-awaited
Twin Peaks: The First Season collection. David Lynch's
surreal, groundbreaking television drama gets the full special
edition treatment with plenty of extras. Presented in full screen
and English 5.1 Dolby surround, supplements include director's
commentaries on select episodes, interviews with the cast and
cinema and TV experts, archival materials from the fanzine "Wrapped
In Plastic, and "Log Lady" introductions. The set includes
all the first season episodes except for the pilot, which could
not be included due to rights issues. Retail for the set is $59.95.
Neil Simon Suite - 10:45pm
Columbia seems to have a thing for Neil Simon lately, recently
announcing a number of classic Simon comedies, including Murder
By Death, The Cheap Detective, and now California
Suite. Arriving on 10/2, the disc is a bare bones release
with anamorphic widescreen and full screen transfers, English
French and Spanish mono and subtitle tracks, and production notes.
Retail is $24.95.
Columbia has also just announced a 12/18 release for the Joan
Crawford favorite Queen Bee. The disc includes a 1.85:1
anamorphic widescreen transfer, the original English mono track,
a still gallery with vintage advertising materials, talent files,
and trailers. Retail is $24.95. (And hey Columbia, how about throwing
us bad movie lovers a bone and release the Crawford camp classic
Berserk while you're at it!?)
New from Anchor bay - 10:45pm
Just announced from Anchor Bay is another wave of December DVD
releases, all scheduled to street on 12/4. First up are two comedies,
Britannia Hospital and Clockwise, both presented
in 1.66:1 anamorphic widescreen and mono. extras include trailers
and the "Malcolm McDowell on Lindsay Anderson" and "Clockwatching
With Mr. Cleese" featurettes, respectively.
Next up is the Hammer horror classic Dr. Jekyll And Sister
Hyde, presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen with English
and French mono tracks, an audio commentary with Martine Beswick,
director Roy Ward Baker, and writer and co-producer Brian Clemens,
a still gallery, trailers, and radio spots. Other 12/4 goodies
include Percy and Morgan, both presented in 1.66:1
anamorphic widescreen and English mono, and with trailers.
And last and certainly least, we have Drew Barrymore in a real
career highpoint, The Amy Fisher Story. Presented in its
original 4:3 television dimensions, there are no extras except
"additional nude scenes within the movie." Retail is
a lowly $14.95.
