Coming to a thumb near you It is not everyday you get a press release like this, so it is with great pleasure I post the news of the expansion of the Steve Oedeker's "Thumbpire" and their new agreement with Image Entertainment. That's right, the epics Thumb Wars and Thumbtanic will soon be coming to a DVD near you. These shorts are very funny, and I can't wait for the words first Thumbcommentary. Check out the release for the full news.
October 5: More Anchor Bay November titles; a double dose of Eurythmics More Anchor Bay November titles Our friends at Anchor Bay, who we think have the best taste of anyone out there, have announced the rest of their November lineup. All I gotta say is, who'd ever thunk we'd see a anamorphic widescreen transfer of Children Of The Corn!? Due on 11/28, watch for that Fritz Kiersch opus, along with Pedro Almodovar's Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, A Better Tomorrow and A Better Tomorrow 2, and Walking The Edge. All are in anamorphic widescreen (except the Better Tomorrow discs, which are non-anamorphic) and feature the trailers, and Walking The Edge also has an audio commentary with Director Norbert Meisel. Retail is $24.95 each. A double dose of Eurythmics One of the 80's best (and most underrated) bands, on the heels of last summer's Peacetour DVD, BMG will be released two more Eurythmics-related discs, their Greatest Hits as well as Annie Lennox: Diva. Both are only $16.95, and are presented in full frame and 2.0 stereo. Street is 10/17 for both.
Big momma who? One of the summer's biggest comedy hits (no big surprise there), Eddie Murphy's Nutty Professor II: The Klumps will make its DVD and VHS debut on 12/5. Universal has issued the press release for the disc, and it looks loaded with great features including an audio commentary, making-of features, and even the Janet Jjackson music video. Check out the full release for all the details. One hit to the body Due on 11/7 from New Line is another in the seemingly unending line of young adult sex comedies, Body Shots. The disc will include both R-rated and Unrated versions in both anamorphic widescreen and pan & scan, and also include English 5.1 and 2.0 surround mixes. Cast bios and the trailer are also included, and retail will be $24.95. Also, last week I mentioned the November arrival of The Price Of Glory as a Warner title, when it is actually coming from New Line (though Warner does distribute all new Line DVD product). Sorry for any confusion! Columbia sets 'Triad' Continuing their series of releasing Asian action films on DVD, Columbia has announced a 12/12 arrival date for the Gong Li epic Shanghai Triad. The disc is in widescreen (though is not listed as anamorphic, which Columbia usually specifies on their press releases) and features mandarin and Chinese 2.0 surround tracks, a 109-minute running time, talent files and theatrical trailers. Retail is $29.95. Where the money is Finally today, USA has announced two new DVDs for the fall, including the acclaimed but little-seen Paul Newman comedy Where The Money Is on 12/19, in anamorphic widescreen and English 5.1 and 2.0 surround, and including the trailer, production notes and cast bios, and the concert documentary Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Year Of the Horse on 11/21, in full frame and 2.0 surround. Retail is $24.95 each.
October 3: New Warner, Anchor Bay and From Dusk Till Dawn and Friends updates Warner announces 'Replacements' special edition My, that was fast. Though it is still playing in the theaters, Warner has announced a 11/28 date for the Keanu Reeves football comedy The Replacements. In addition to a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer and English and French 5.1 tracks, the DVD will be quite feature-loaded, with an audio commentary with Director Howard Deutch, the HBO First Look special "The Making Of The Replacements," the featurette "Making The Plays: An Actor's Guide to Football," cast and real-life football star career highlights, and the theatrical trailer. Retail is $24.95. Anchor Bay's November schedule Anchor Bay has just announced their full late October/November lineup with final street dates and specs, and there are some fun titles in here, including some Disney licensees. On 10/31 comes All Creatures Big & Small, The Devil In Max Devlin(!), Ring Of Bright Water and An Elephant Called Slowly, followed by The Lemon Sisters, Garden Of Allah, Little Lord Fauntleroy, Portrait Of Jennie, That'll Be The Day, Times Square and The Best Of Mr. Bill. All are anamorphic widescreen except Mr. Bill, Garden Of Allah, Fauntleroy and Portrait Of Jennie, which are in their original full frame aspect rations. All are English mono except The Lemon Sisters which is 2.0 stereo, All Creatures Great & Small which is 2.0 Surround, and Times Square which is 5.1. The Lemon Sisters, All Creatures Great & Small, That'll Be The Day and Times Square feature trailers, and Time Square also includes an audio commentary with Director Allan Moyle. Each disc is $24.95 retail. Friends and From Dusk Till Dawn updates Just a couple of quick final updates for today. First, I made an error last Friday about the upcoming 2-disc Friends set due on 12/19 from Warner. The set will not include the first 10 episodes of the series; rather, it will be the 10 most popular episodes as voted on by fans of the series. However, just how these votes were tabulated I have no idea, but I'm sure more info will arrive in the coming weeks when the full announcement comes. However, the choice to release a 10-episode "best of" collection of Friends may disappoint fans who were hoping to be able to collect the series chronologically someday. Stay tuned... Second, many readers have written in about problems with the just-released From Dusk Till Dawn special edition. There has been a problem with some pressings of the set, where only the Full Tilt Boogie disc has been included (the set is supposed to be double-disc set, with From Dusk Till Dawn on the second disc). The Buena Vista Consumer Hotline recommends that customers who received a set with a missing disc simply return their copy to the point of purchase for an exchange or store credit. Predictably, future shipments of the set will fix this problem. Hold on to those receipts, especially if you bought it online...
October 1 and 2: new 'Virgin Suicides', 'X-Files Season 2' and 'Pop & Me' announcements Like A Virgin Though many laughed when Sofia Coppola was cast in her father's epic Godfather III, she just might be having the last laugh now. I think she's proven herself to be quite a perceptive and accomplished director with her first film, The Virgin Suicides, due out on 12/19 from Paramount. This is a very small, personal "mood" movie, and should make a fine DVD. The disc includes an anamorphic transfer, English 5.1 soundtrack, a making-of featurette, the Air music video "Playground Love" and the theatrical trailer. Retail is $29.95. If you missed it in theaters, you may want to check it out on DVD. X-Factor While the date has been announced for a long time now, Fox has released the specs for the Season Two set of The X-Files Collection. In addition to the continuation of the same features on the Season One collection, including "The Truth Behind Season Two" featurette, interviews with Director Chris Carter (that also appeared on the VHS versions of the shows) and the "Behind The Truth" TV spots, new features include special effects behind-the-scenes footage and a new DVD-ROM game "Unholy Alliances." Interestingly, the set is only listed as having English and French 2.0 stereo tracks, along with English and Spanish subtitles. Retail for the set is $149.95, and the entire series of Season 2 episodes is included on the 7-disc set. My and me dad While it perhaps didn't get the attention it deserved, the documentary Pop & Me may get more of a chance when MGM releases a special edition of the film on 12/19. Presented in its original 1.37:1 aspect ratio with an English 2.0 surround track, the DVD also includes an audio commentary track with filmmakers Chris and Richard Roe, deleted footage and an interview with Julian Lennon, who contributed music to the score. Retail is $19.95. |
