Those
poor nerds, they just can't get no respect. Though recently released
as a pretty nice single-disc "Double Feature" by Fox,
Revenge Of The Nerds seems to have fallen under the editor's knife
and received a bit of a nip and tuck for its big DVD debut. Though
rather minor, and not really affecting the plot, theme or character
development, the cuts are nonetheless notable.
The total runtime of these snippets runs but a few seconds, and
you can find them at around the 27:11 mark on the DVD. The scene
in question is when our beleaguered hero Lewis goes looking for
a suitable nerd residence, and sees a rental sign. In the uncut
version, we see the sign and a phone number, a shot which is rather
noticeably truncated from the DVD. Then, in a segment retained
in both the cut and the uncut versions, being the nerd he is,
Lewis plucks the sign and takes it back to the gym ("I found a
house!") But then the following shot of all the nerds heading
back to the house when sign in hand has been cut on the DVD ("Isn't
it fantastic?!")
Interestingly, both the DVD and the 1993 reissue VHS edition
contain this altered version, but not the previous laserdisc and
early VHS editions. While these cuts might seem arbitrary, the
leading theory is that since the sign featured a very prominently
displayed phone number (which is now a big no-no to show onscreen),
Fox may have snipped these shots to eliminate the number and thus
the sign. Though the cuts are a bit distracting (especially if
you are looking for them), perhaps it is better than those annoying
"digitized washouts" a la MTV?
In any case, Fox has yet to return our calls regarding these
cuts, and no formal recall or reason for the snipping has been
issued. Stay tuned...
