With all the talk of "revisionist filmmaking" these
days, it is worthwhile to remember that such retinkering didn't
begin with George Lucas and the advent of CGI technology. Case
in point is the recent DVD release of the Barbra Streisand and
George Segal misfire The Owl & The Pussycat. Not one of Babs
better-known or well-liked comedies, the film is notable for a
few historic firsts. Aside from being Babs first R-rated film
and heavily promoted as such, Le Streisand also agreed to appear
nude in the film, and would also become the first woman in Hollywood
history to utter the "F" word onscreen.
Alas, Streisand changed her mind. While the naughty footage was
filmed, the nude scene was excised along with most of the profanity,
and the film was subsequently Rated PG. (The nude footage was
also completely destroyed in 1970; too bad the Internet wasn't
around then.) However, Streisand's famous line "Do us a favor
and just fuck off" remained in most theatrical prints, and
was also included in a 1999 re-release of the film.
But, oddly enough, for their recent DVD release Columbia elected
to not use the "fuck" print, and thus the DVD
omits this precious line of dialogue. We received a reply from
Columbia regarding the omission, and they are aware of the change
and that is the version they decided to go with. So much for historical
accuracy, eh?
