Not
exactly a cinema classic, Hooper is one of the better Burt Reynolds
and Hal Needham collaborations, and does feature Burt in his prime
before the 80's downfall. While the DVD is pretty terrible - full
frame transfer, no extras - it does feature somewhat of a bonus
for fans, the full "TV version" of the film.
Released theatrically with a runtime of 99 minutes, which the
back of the DVD mistakenly lists, the DVD actually features 7
additional minutes of footage. These extra minutes are usually
shown when the film airs on television, and the insertion of such
additional footage is actually quite common, and is usually done
to pad out the runtime and fit into TV's strict 30-minute programming
blocks.
Perhaps because Warner used whatever ugly full frame transfer
they had lying around, inadvertently the TV cut was thrown on
the DVD with no one noticing? In any event, the extra scenes are
as follows:
- An extended "party scene" following the fight at
the Palomino Club
- A early-morning discussion between Jocko and Sonny about having
babies
- A dialogue scene in Hooper's kitchen between Ski and Gwen,
where he reveals his marital problems
- A slightly extended version of the scene where the crew views
"stunt reels" from Deliverance! (a real Burt Reynolds movie,
no less)
- And finally, an additional scene with Sonny and Ski getting
into a fight outside Sonny's trailer
Since Hooper probably sold about ten copies on DVD, what do you
want to bet that we won't see a new and remastered version of
the film re-released anytime soon?
