Another interesting example of a "cut" DVD that is
actually an addition, not a subtraction. Recently released on
DVD by MGM Home Entertainment, the small cult gem Echo Park features
an alternate ending that didn't appear in either the previous
laserdisc or VHS editions of the film.
In previous home video versions, the film ends immediately after
the father of August (Michael Bowen) says with a slap, "What
are YOU doing in America!?" But on the DVD version, there
is an additional scene with all three of the main characters in
the mountains together.
Since the DVD is not billed as a special edition or director's
cut, one can only assume that either this scene was in the original
theatrical cut of the film and the previous video versions were
altered, or this is a scene included in television broadcasts
of the film, and MGM used this longer cut. Or, perhaps this is
simply a secret director's cut? In any case, this mysterious addition
is an intriguing one...
