Rhino Home Video Obtains Home Video Rights Of
Complete Gumby Library New-To-DVD Releases Planned for March 2002"You're
bendable, dependable, most of all befriendable.
LOS ANGELES -- Rhino Home Video has acquired
the home video rights to the entire collection of the highly-acclaimed
and much-adored GUMBY animated series. The deal encompasses 214
total episodes of The Gumby Show and The All-New Gumby created
from 1956 to 1988 and marks the first time the full library will
be available to the public.
Rhino Home Video plans to release DVD boxed sets
of the complete library as well as individual DVDs and VHS cassettes
of the shorts. This marks the DVD debut of the early episodes
and the home video premiere of the 1980s stop-motion animation
cartoons. The GUMBY series will be a part of the Kid Rhino brand.
Heat Licensing, the master licensor for GUMBY products, was responsible
for licensing the deal.
"We knew Rhino Home Video would guard the integrity
of what GUMBY stands forfun, creative, and exciting adventures
for the whole family," said Art Clokey, creator of GUMBY.
"If there was ever a series that clearly defined
popular culture, it is GUMBY, and Rhino is the ultimate purveyor
of pop culture," said Arny Schorr, senior vice president
of Rhino Home Video. "We want to properly maintain and expose
the feel-good nostalgia that GUMBY represents to its fans of all
ages."
Clokey created the GUMBY characters in 1955 and
followed with a series in 1956. To this day, he remains one of
the most endearing and memorable stop-action, clay-animated characters.
First appearing in shorts on The Howdy Doody Show, GUMBY soon
had his own Saturday morning TV series, The Gumby Show, and new
syndicated episodes were made throughout the 1960s. A final series,
The All-New Gumby, broadcast in the late 1980s, and repeated during
the 1990s, brought his adventures of to a new generation of fans.
Celebrating his 45th birthday in 2001, GUMBY continues
his popular run with the upcoming DVD release, worldwide merchandising
efforts, and plans for new Gumby productions.
